Location:
Midlands, UK
How
did you get started in power kiting:
At the time I was into short circuit racing,
hang-gliding and various other adventure sports, then by accident
I ended up at the Bristol Kite Festival and I knew I was going
to give it all up to do kiting.
What
equipment do you use:
I love the speed so I'm always looking out
for high performance four line foils.
Which
buggy do you use:
I have tried them all but I keep coming
back to the Flexifoil buggy - they are great for holding lots
of power, robust and really good for tricks and speed.
What
have you been doing the past year:
Displays at kite festivals, testing out
new equipment and passionately promoting power kiting.
What
plans do you have for this year:
As much flying as possible, kite festivals,
displays, training - there is nothing as good as inspiring and
then keeping in touch with people that have come on a training
course and taken the sport up..
Favourite
Kite Buggying Spot:
I dont think it matters with the right people
around you. it can be somewhere exotic or your local flying spot.
Sun scorched desert terrain of Mauritania or on the ultra fast
hard flat beach of Le Franqui in France are great places to go
but so is going out locally with your buddies.
What would you recommend to a first
time kite buggier who wanted to enter into the sport, what kite
and buggy would you recommend and why:
It has to be something you can get the most
fun out of! Kit you are going to use more often than not. Find
out at what level as an individual that you want to play at. More
often than not it is best to select something that is mid-range
with a nice smooth steady controllable pull to it. Everyone is
different.
What
kind of tricks do you like to do?
I prefer technical
buggy tricks, flatland
and speed manoeuvres.
What
surface do you prefer for Buggying?
Hard Sand is great for speed or tricks especially
when it's smooth and slideable - short, dew soaked grass is great
for spins etc in low winds.
How
do you think the sport will grow?
Controllability is the future of power kiting
the ability to do just what you want to do control what power
you want - the control systems and foil design in just the last
few years has advanced bigtime. Powerkiting is growing very quickly
and I see power kites and foils being put to more and more uses.
What's
is your best session to date?
Every session is often an experience in
itself with a story to tell. Often I can recall a flying session
that happened ten years ago with the same enthusiasm that I talk
about a flying session I had last week.
Have
you received any injuries from power kiting?
Yes - but none I would consider serious
- they could have been worse I suppose if I hadn't have been wearing
the appropriate safety equipment.
Anything
else you want to say?
Just get out there and keep
it fun!
